Solar Hot Water System Types

Thermosiphon Systems - Roof-mounted tank and collectors in a single unit. Water naturally circulates as it heats, requiring no pump. Best for unobstructed north-facing roofs with adequate structural support.

Split Systems - Collectors on the roof with the tank at ground level. Uses a small pump to circulate water. Ideal when roof structure can’t support a tank or for aesthetic reasons.

Is Solar Right for Your Home?

Solar hot water isn’t ideal for every situation. During our assessment, we check:

• Roof orientation: North-facing is optimal, east/west can work
• Shading: Trees, neighbouring buildings, or roof features can reduce efficiency
• Roof structure: Thermosiphon tanks are heavy and require adequate support
• Aesthetic considerations: Roof-mounted tanks are visible; split systems are more discreet

We’ll honestly advise if heat pump technology might better suit your situation, particularly for partially shaded roofs or homes where tank visibility is a concern.

Electric vs Gas Boosting

All solar systems include a booster for cloudy periods. We can configure:

• Electric boosting: Simple and reliable, uses off-peak tariffs where available
• Gas boosting: Faster recovery, suitable if you have existing gas supply

In Perth’s climate, boosting typically accounts for only 20-30% of annual hot water heating, with solar providing the rest.

Government Incentives

Solar hot water systems qualify for STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates), reducing your upfront cost. The rebate amount depends on system efficiency and your location. We handle all paperwork and apply rebates directly to your quote.
